Custom iron entry door on a Long Island home

Entry Door Installation in Melville, NY

Melville runs from the Route 110 office corridor to some of Huntington’s larger newer-construction homes, and the openings we’re asked to quote here tend to be bigger — wider doubles, taller transoms. We measure for that at your house, then build it twenty minutes away in Old Bethpage.

Which of these is your entry in Melville?

Newer construction along the Route 110 corridor tends to call for a double or a full sidelight-and-transom group; older Melville homes closer to the Huntington line are more often a single or sidelight swap.

Single Entry Door

One leaf, no glass either side. The most common Long Island colonial entry.

Two operating leaves. Needs a wider rough opening — we check the header before we quote.

One company, start to finish

We forge it, we hang it, and we come back when it needs us

A lot of what gets built for Melville is a bigger configuration than the Nassau side of our territory — wider doubles, taller transoms, heavier glass. That doesn’t change how it gets made: cut and welded in the same shop, by the same crew that drives up Route 110 to hang it and comes back if anything needs adjusting. The size changes the price, not the process.

12-gauge tube steel frames and doors. Solid 5/8", 3/4" and 1" scrolls welded to a heavy-duty tubing frame, then ground flat — run your hand along the corner and there's nothing to feel.

The same company that built the door hangs it. Old unit out, new frame set plumb, foamed and sealed, hardware hung. Drywall and paint are a return visit — we come back to complete the finish.

Why we don’t powder-coat

Powder coat is one baked layer. Ours is seven, applied by hand: zinc galvanizing to stop rust before anything else goes on, then a dip, catalytic primer, blasting, two coats of exterior artisan paint, bronze dusting and a clear coat. That is where the depth in the colour comes from, and it is why the corner of a door looks the same in year five as the middle of it.

Every door is priced after the measure — the opening, the glass and the hardware decide the number, so we don't publish one we'd have to walk back. Pricing varies widely by configuration, which is exactly why we measure first.

The process, with real dates on it

From the first call to a door that closes

Step 1

Free measure at your house

We measure the opening, check the header and the sill, and photograph the elevation. If the opening needs work, you get the price for that now — not on install day.

Step 2

CAD drawing and price

Your door drawn to your opening, with the glass, finish and hardware priced line by line. No deposit yet.

Step 3

Estimate approved

You approve the estimate, we take a deposit, and the steel goes on the schedule. Nothing is cut before you approve.

Step 4

Built by Us

We keep a large selection of doors in stock for fast installation and also build custom doors to fit your exact needs.

Specifications

What it’s made of, and what that means for you

12-gauge steel
Frames and doors both, not just the slab. Twice the thickness of a big-box steel door: it won’t dent from a bike handlebar or flex in wind.
Insulated door and frame
Polyurethane foam injected into both. Most makers insulate the slab and leave the frame hollow, which is where the cold actually gets in.
Operable glass with metal screens
The glass panels open so you can reach the far side of the glass, behind a real metal screen that holds on with magnets and lifts out in one motion. Open your front door to the breeze and keep the bugs out — and it’s how you clean both sides of the glass.
No visible welds
Solid 5/8", 3/4" and 1" scrolls welded to a heavy-duty tubing frame, then ground and dressed by hand. No seam line to open up and hold water.
Heavy-duty barrel hinges
The reason a door this heavy still opens with one hand.
Glazing
Dual-pane, argon-filled, Low-E coated and tempered. Hand-applied faux finish on the glass if you want it.
Seven-step finish
Zinc galvanizing against rust, then dip, catalytic primer, blast, two coats of exterior paint, bronze dusting, clear coat. Seven hand-applied steps, and deliberately not powder coat.
Weatherstripping
Heavy-duty, around the jamb and around every glass frame — not just the door edge.
Built to your opening
Made to the exact dimensions of the opening you already have, then pre-hung with flush bolts and drilled for hardware before it leaves the shop.

Warranty

Lifetime on the structure. Two years on the finish. Here's why.

Everyone in this industry claims the longest warranty in it. Here's ours, with the short number printed the same size as the long one.

What we don’t cover
Damage from impact — a car, a delivery, a storm-thrown object.
Hardware you buy elsewhere and we didn’t install.
Finish damage from pressure washing or solvent cleaners.
Movement caused by foundation or framing failure in the house.
Normal wear on weatherstripping, which we replace at cost.
Doors relocated to another house or opening.
If any of that happens, call us anyway. We service what we build, and we’ll quote the repair.

FAQ

The questions people actually ask us

In the order they come up on the phone — price first, because everyone is thinking it.

It depends on the opening, and we won’t guess on a web page. Pricing depends entirely on your opening and the options you choose — a single door in a square opening at the low end, a double with sidelights, a transom and forged scrollwork at the top. That number covers the door, the frame, the glass, the hardware, removal of the old unit, the install, and the drywall and paint after. Send a photo of your entry and we’ll give you a real figure in 48 hours.
Two real ones. They’re heavy — a double runs 600 to 900 pounds, so the header and framing have to be sound, which is why we check at the measure and not on install day. And steel conducts cold: in a sustained deep freeze you can see condensation on the interior face of any metal door. Ours are foam-insulated in both the slab and the frame, with dual-pane Low-E argon glass and heavy weatherstripping around the jamb and every glass frame, which is what keeps that to a minimum. If any of those are dealbreakers, a fiberglass door is a legitimate choice and we’ll tell you so.
A lot of Melville’s housing stock is newer than what we see closer to Old Bethpage, and steel’s thinner sightlines tend to suit that newer construction — more glass, a cleaner line. The older homes nearer Huntington village still lean iron. We build both at similar prices, so it comes down to the house.
You’re not fighting salt air out here the way a waterfront Huntington job might. What actually wears a finish down inland is UV and a weld that wasn’t sealed right. Same seven-step finish on every door regardless, and the same two-year warranty on it.
In a sustained deep freeze you can get condensation on the interior face of any metal door. That’s physics, not a defect, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling. What we do about it: polyurethane foam injected into both the slab and the frame, dual-pane argon-filled Low-E tempered glass, and heavy weatherstripping around the jamb and around every glass frame. Two things in the house make it worse — high indoor humidity and a heat vent blowing straight at the door — and we’ll walk you through both at the measure.
Melville falls under the Town of Huntington, not Oyster Bay, so the building department is a different office than the one that covers our own shop. A like-for-like replacement in an existing opening usually doesn’t trigger a permit there either, but we confirm it before you order, not after.
On the newer Melville construction it’s less common than on an older Long Island colonial, but it still happens, usually from settling. We laser-measure every opening regardless of the house’s age, and if something needs rebuilding you get that number at the measure.
One day. Old unit out and new unit in happens inside the same few hours — we set the frame plumb, foam and seal it, hang the hardware, and clean up before dark. You sleep behind your new door that night. Drywall and paint are a return visit; we can’t finish those on day one.
Showroom & shop

Come stand in front of one

From Melville, take Route 110 north to the Northern State Parkway west, then the Round Swamp Road exit south — the shop is a few minutes further on Winding Road. About fifteen to twenty minutes outside of rush hour on 110. Come stand in front of a finished door before you commit to one: swing the glass open behind its screen, look at a corner up close, hear what 12-gauge steel actually sounds like when it closes.
